One such prominent personality who is expected to attend the Mahakumbh this year is Apple co-founder Steve Jobs's wife, Laurene Powell Jobs.
As per several media reports, Laurene Powell Jobs is also set to observe Kalpvas, an ancient spiritual discipline practiced during the Mela. Further, Laurene, the founder and chair of Emerson Collective, is also likely to arrive at the MahaKumbh on January 13 and will be staying at the camp of Swami Kaliashananda, the ‘Mahamnadleshwar’ of Niranjani Akhara.
What is Kalpavas and its significance?
Kalpavas finds its mention in scriptures like the Mahabharata and refers to the practice of a month-long period of austerity and spiritual focus. People who observe this ritual are known as Kalpvashis. These Kalpavashis are expected to renounce modern comforts and live in tents near the Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.
During this period, which begins in Paush Purnima and concludes in Maghi Purnima, devotees engage in daily rituals which include holy dips in the river, attending spiritual discourses, and listening to devotional music. These practices symbolize the purification of mind and body. People spend their time praying, meditating, and participating in community worship. The Mela brings people together for spiritual growth and connection, going beyond borders and cultures.
